Roof Warranties Explained: Workmanship vs. Manufacturer Coverage

November 4, 2026

When a roofer says your new roof is “under warranty,” it is fair to ask: which warranty? Because a roof actually comes with two very different kinds of coverage, and understanding the difference protects you long after the crew drives away.

Manufacturer warranty: the materials

The manufacturer warranty covers the shingles or roofing materials themselves against defects. If a batch fails prematurely because of how it was made, this is the coverage that applies. These warranties can sound impressive, sometimes 30 years or even “lifetime,” but the fine print matters. Most cover only the materials, prorate the value over time, and can be voided by improper installation or inadequate ventilation.

Workmanship warranty: the installation

The workmanship warranty is the roofer’s own guarantee that the roof was installed correctly. This is the one that matters most in the early years, because many roof problems come not from bad shingles but from bad installation: nails placed wrong, flashing sealed poorly, ventilation ignored. A strong workmanship warranty says the contractor stands behind their work.

Why the contractor matters more than the number

Here is the catch most homeowners miss: a workmanship warranty is only as good as the company behind it. A guarantee from a roofer who will not answer the phone next spring is worth nothing. This is exactly why choosing the right roofing contractor matters so much, especially in a market like DFW where storm chasers appear after every hailstorm and vanish just as fast.

What to ask before you sign

  • Is the workmanship warranty in writing, and how long does it last?
  • Is the company local, established, and likely to be here in five years?
  • What voids the manufacturer warranty, and does the crew follow those requirements (especially ventilation)?
  • Who do I call if something goes wrong, and how fast do you respond?

A roof is one of the largest investments you make in your home, so ask every contractor to put their warranty in writing before you sign. Learn more about our residential roofing or get in touch.
