How to Choose a Roofing Company in DFW: 7 Things to Look For

May 1, 2026

Choosing a roofing company in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is not a decision you want to rush. Your roof protects everything underneath it, and the contractor you hire determines whether that protection lasts 10 years or 30. With hundreds of roofing companies operating across DFW — and a fresh wave of storm chasers after every hailstorm — knowing what to look for can save you thousands of dollars and years of headaches.

Here are seven things every homeowner and building owner should evaluate before signing a contract with a roofing company in the DFW metroplex.

1. Verify They Are Licensed and Insured in Texas

This sounds basic, but it is the single most important step. Texas does not require a statewide roofing license, which means virtually anyone can call themselves a roofing contractor. However, many DFW cities and counties require local permits and registrations for roofing work.

At minimum, your roofing company should carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. Ask for certificates of insurance and verify they are current. If a worker is injured on your property and the contractor does not carry workers’ comp, you could be held liable.

Also confirm that the contractor pulls the necessary permits for your city. Unpermitted work can create problems when you sell your home or file a future insurance claim.

2. Look for a Permanent Local Presence

After major storms, the DFW area gets flooded with out-of-town roofing crews — commonly called “storm chasers.” They go door-to-door offering quick, cheap repairs, do the work, and then disappear. When problems surface six months later, there is no one to call.

Choose a roofing company with a physical office in the DFW area, a verifiable business history, and staff who will still be here next year. A company rooted in the community has a reputation to protect and a reason to stand behind their work.

Look for signs of permanence: How long have they been in business? Do they have a local phone number? Can you visit their office? Do they have Google reviews from customers in your area?

3. Check Manufacturer Certifications

Roofing material manufacturers — like GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, and Firestone — offer certification programs for contractors who meet their training and quality standards. These certifications matter because they unlock extended warranty coverage that uncertified contractors simply cannot offer.

For example, a GAF Master Elite contractor can offer a 50-year warranty that covers both materials and workmanship. A non-certified contractor installing the same shingles may only be able to offer a limited materials warranty with no labor coverage. The materials are the same, but the protection you get is dramatically different.

Ask any contractor you are considering which manufacturers they are certified with, and what warranty options those certifications provide.

4. Read Reviews — But Read Them Carefully

Online reviews are a valuable tool, but not all reviews are created equal. Here is how to get the most out of them:

  • Check multiple platforms. Look at Google, the BBB, Yelp, and Facebook. A company with strong reviews across multiple platforms is more trustworthy than one with reviews on only one site.
  • Read the negative reviews. Every company gets an occasional bad review. What matters is how they respond. A professional, constructive response to criticism says more about a company than a hundred five-star reviews.
  • Look for specifics. Reviews that mention the crew, the timeline, the communication, or the cleanup process are more credible than generic “great job” reviews.
  • Check the dates. A company with a steady stream of recent reviews is actively working in your area. A company whose reviews dried up two years ago may not be.

5. Get a Detailed Written Estimate

A professional roofing estimate should be specific and comprehensive. Be wary of contractors who give you a single number without breaking down what is included. A proper estimate should cover:

  • Scope of work (full replacement, overlay, or repair)
  • Materials to be used, including brand and product line
  • Tear-off and disposal of the existing roof
  • Underlayment, ice and water shield, and drip edge
  • Ventilation assessment and any upgrades
  • Permits and code compliance
  • Cleanup and haul-away
  • Warranty details (materials and workmanship)
  • Estimated timeline

If a contractor cannot or will not provide this level of detail, that is a red flag. You should know exactly what you are paying for before any work begins.

6. Ask About Their Experience With Insurance Claims

In the DFW area, a large percentage of roof replacements are covered — at least in part — by homeowner’s insurance after storm damage. A good roofing company should be experienced in working with insurance companies and able to help you through the claims process.

Ask these questions:

  • Will you provide a detailed inspection report I can submit with my claim?
  • Will you meet with my insurance adjuster on-site?
  • Do you handle supplement requests if the initial settlement is insufficient?
  • Do you require an Assignment of Benefits (AOB)? (A reputable company should not require this.)

A contractor who is experienced with insurance work can often recover thousands more in legitimate claim value than a homeowner negotiating alone. For more on this process, see our guide on filing a roof insurance claim in Texas.

7. Understand the Warranty Before You Sign

Roofing warranties can be confusing because there are typically two separate warranties in play:

  • Manufacturer’s warranty: Covers defects in the roofing materials. Duration and coverage vary by product and by whether your contractor is certified by that manufacturer.
  • Workmanship warranty: Covers installation errors. This comes from the contractor, not the manufacturer. Duration varies widely, from 1 year to lifetime depending on the company.

The strongest protection comes from choosing a manufacturer-certified contractor who can offer an extended warranty covering both materials and labor. This means if anything goes wrong — whether it is a defective shingle or an installation mistake — you are covered under one warranty with one point of contact.

Read the fine print. Some warranties are prorated (meaning coverage decreases over time), some require annual inspections to remain valid, and some are non-transferable if you sell your home. Know what you are getting before the first nail is driven.
