Roof Styles Explained: Common Roof Types on DFW Homes

September 9, 2026

Take a slow drive through any established DFW neighborhood and you will spot a surprising variety of rooflines — some steep and gabled, others hipped and low, a few flat and modern. Those shapes are not just aesthetic. Each roof style handles Texas weather, drainage, and attic space differently, and knowing yours helps you make smarter decisions about maintenance and replacement.

Here are the roof types you are most likely to see on North Texas homes.

Gable Roof

The classic triangle. A gable roof has two sloping sides that meet at a ridge, forming a peak at each end. It is the most common style in the DFW metroplex because it sheds water and hail well, allows for good attic space and ventilation, and is cost-effective to build. Its main vulnerability is high wind against the flat end walls.

Hip Roof

A hip roof slopes on all four sides, meeting at a ridge or point. Because there are no flat end walls, hip roofs handle wind especially well — a plus during storm season. They are a bit more complex and costly to build than gables, and the extra valleys and seams mean flashing quality really matters.

Low-Slope and Flat Roofs

Common on modern homes, additions, and porches, low-slope roofs drain slowly and need materials suited to gentle inclines. Standard shingles are not ideal here; these sections often call for metal or membrane systems. Understanding your roof pitch is key to knowing what your roof needs.

Mixed and Complex Rooflines

Many North Texas homes combine styles — a gabled main roof over a hipped garage, with a low-slope porch tying it together. These custom rooflines look great, but they have more valleys, transitions, and flashing points, which are the spots most likely to leak if they are not installed and maintained correctly.

Why Your Roof Style Matters at Replacement Time

Your roof’s shape affects everything from material options to cost to how vulnerable it is in a storm. A quality roofer reads those details and tailors the installation to them. Whatever style tops your home, our team knows how to protect it — and every job is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty. Want to know what your roofline needs?
