Gutters are the least glamorous part of your roof, and the most underrated. When they work, you never think about them. When they clog, they can quietly cause some of the most expensive damage a home can face, and none of it starts where you would expect.
What clogged gutters actually do
When leaves, twigs, and shingle grit fill a gutter, water has nowhere to go but over the edge and back under your roofline. From there it works into the fascia and soffit, rots the roof decking along the eaves, and spills down against your siding and foundation. In a hard North Texas downpour, a clogged gutter can undo the protection your roof is supposed to provide, one storm at a time.
The season matters
Fall is prime time for this. As trees drop their leaves, gutters fill fast, right before the cold, wet months when you least want water pooling around your home. Clearing them now means winter rain and the occasional ice melt actually drain the way they should.
Simple gutter maintenance that pays off
- Clear leaves and debris from the gutters and downspouts twice a year, in fall and spring.
- Confirm water flows all the way to the downspouts and away from the foundation.
- Check that gutters are still firmly attached and pitched slightly toward the downspouts.
- Look for rust, sagging sections, or seams that have pulled apart.
While you are at it, a glance at the roofline itself is smart. Granules collecting in the gutter, or water stains on the fascia, are worth a closer roof inspection.
When it is more than maintenance
If your gutters are constantly overflowing, pulling away from the house, or you are seeing water stains inside near exterior walls, the issue may already have reached the roof edge. That is common and fixable, but it is best caught early.
Gutters are cheap. The damage they prevent is not. A little attention this fall protects your roof, your walls, and your foundation through the whole wet season.
